TRAVEMÜNDE, GERMANY-(18-7-2003) „We don’t need Olympia, we have the most beautifull sailing competition in the world.” Self confident and a bit capricious, Rolf Ewert spoke at the opening ceremony of the 114. Travemuende Week on Friday evening. The chairman of the organising Luebecker Yacht Club had more than 1000 spectators on his side, when he praised the high sportive and leisure level of the event. Immediately afterwords, Bernd Saxe, the mayor of Luebeck gave the signal for the hoisting of the flags and officially opened the 114. Travemuende Week.
Saxe spoke of the founding in 1879, when three major events occured, that changed the world. The electric bulb was invented, Albert Einstein was born, and a few keen sailors competed for a bottle of “Rotspon” – red wine. “That was the first Travemuende Week”. And next year for the 115. jubilee the mayor will donate a bottle of “Rotspon” for the winner, he said.
On three courses the fighting for points started. On shore side the breeze was good, better than the meteorologists predicted. While the keelboats ended one race, the mistral surfers completed three, the 14-footers even five races.
Amelie Lux, silver medailist in Sydney could not come, because she is training for the worlds in Cadiz, and Moritz Martin from Linsengericht did not have to fear her strength an had a good run. He won all three races in the mistral one design.
André Hartung from Kiel managed to become second, closely followed by swiss Richard Stauffacher. Best woman in the fleet of 21 starters was Romy Kienzl from Berlin on fifth position.
In the 14-footer class, Axel Reinsch (26) from Hamburg and his crew Oliver Marquardt (27) from Bad Schwartau took their discard in the second start. „We had a little collision and capsized”, appologized the helmsman. All other four races they could lead and therefore dominated the fleet. Second team is Peter Roocks/Ole Klinger from Luebeck.
On the offshore course the wind died down during the afternoon and only one race was started by race officer Andreas Stülken. The victory in the IMS I class went to „Varuna“ from skipper Jens Kellinghusen, who just completed the DaimlerChrysler North Atlantic Challenge from Newport/USA to Hamburg.
A home score went to “Chica” (Christian Jaeger) from the Luebecker Yacht Club in class OSC I.
On Saturday the Travemuende Week will be continued on eight of the ten courses. The Beneteau 25 class starts its northern-german championship on the offshore course. The forecast talks about light winds froom the southwest. “We don’t expect more than two beaufort”, said race chairman Walter Mielke, “but we are lucky if it will be steady”.
